A pharmacologist, Prof. Noel Wannang, says that laptops are silent sperm killers through their emitted electromagnetic waves when switched on and placed on the laps by users.
Wannang told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, that users of laptops should desist from placing them near their testes.
When laptops are placed near testes, the waves emitting from them could directly destroyed the semen, cause sperm count to drop progressively, thus decreasing fertility, he said.
The don, who specialises in Toxicology, said researches had revealed that consuming local drinks such as Goskolo, Burkutu, and Pito among others could lead to a significant decrease in spermatocytes.
According to him, this is the sperm cells found in the semen and can lead to infertility.
He said: “What we take may make us susceptible to suicide by instalment.”
Wannang also expressed worries that the country had become a dumping ground for foods and drugs banned in other parts of the world.
He said: “It is rather, unfortunate, that foods and drugs banned in other parts of the world are booming in Nigeria.
“The Federal Government should establish a toxicology agency to develop autonomous toxicological laboratories in the six geopolitical zones of the country.
“Appropriate legislation with implementation strategies should be placed on some items imported into the country.”
The lecturer also said some cosmetics like deodorants, air fresheners and moth repellants had volatile organic compounds found in them.
The VOCs could cause both visual and memory impairment, he said.
Wannang advised the Federal Government to allocate research grants to toxicological studies in order to promote good health and longevity of human beings.
