Ibinabo Fiberisima files bail application, may be released today

The Court of Appeal Lagos Division today, will today, preside over the bail application of the immediate past president of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberisima. The actress is seeking her release from the five year jail term affirmed by the Appeal Court, pending the determination of the case by the Supreme Court.

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, had previously upheld the judgment of a Lagos High Court which sentenced the actress and former beauty queen to five years imprisonment for the death of Dr. Giwa Suraj. The court dismissed the appeal filed by the actress, challenging the sentence which was handed down by Justice Deborah Oluwayemi for reckless driving which caused the death of Dr. Suraj, in an auto crash which happened along the Lekki-Epe expressway, Lagos in 2006. This is coming hours after the late doctor’s sister, Bola Giwa- Adeyemi wrote an article that went viral online. In the said post, she lauded the Nigerian justice system in the story she captioned “Justice At Last.”

The statement partly read; “Ibinabo was never remorseful, they brought her to meet with me shortly after my brother’s death in G.R.A. Ikeja before my return to the USA, but her only concern then was to drop the charges against her.

I told her that it’s not my family Vs hers but the State Vs her, that where I come from in the USA, we do not interfere with the justice system, that they should do their job and advise her to apologize publicly to the masses and to the family and throw herself to the mercy of the court. She said and l quote, “I can’t do that, because it’s going to damage my career.”
