The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Solomon Arase, has disclosed that the Nigeria Police spent over N600 million in the last few years, to procure dogs from foreign countries.
Arase, who stated this Thursday in Abuja, at the commissioning of the Police’s Dog Breeding Centre and the Ultra Modern Mounted Troop Stable, lamented that the huge opportunities that abound in such importation, in terms of crime fighting, were not explored and exploited.
He said the trend of importation of police dogs had continued, notwithstanding the wholesome fact that some of the said dogs could not adapt to the nature of policing in the country.
The IGP said the culture of importing police dogs, to compliment crime-fighting efforts of officers and men, was no longer sustainable, in view of the harsh economic realities, occasioned by continuous drop in the price of crude oil in the international market.
