FAAN moves to stop flights’ cancellation over weather

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said it is working hard to put an end to flights’ cancellation at the nation’s airports as a result of poor visibility.

It said it is working in collaboration with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to provide critical navigational aids and equipment at the airports to enable aircraft landing even during harmattan haze.

Airline operators under the aegis of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) had said that more than 50 percent of flights were cancelled while over 80 percent were delayed due to poor visibility occasioned by the harmattan haze in recent times.

But the General Manager, Corporate Communications of FAAN, Mr. Yakubu Dati told our correspondent that the authority has risen to the occasion by working with NAMA to ensure that all critical navigational and landing aids are provided at the airports.

Besides, he said FAAN had commenced the installation of airfield lighting at 13 airports across the country with that of Margret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar test-run last week.

According to him, while that of Calabar is working perfectly, others have reached advanced stages of completion.
