Rotimi ‎Amaechi gets UN appointment

Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation and former Governor of Rivers State, has been appointed as a member of the United Nations Institute For Training And Research (UNITAR).

This was disclosed in a press release by PRNigeria, a media group for government and military press releases, which revealed that the appointment took effect from Jan 1, 2016.

“The Hon. Minister of Transportation Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been appointed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Mr. Ban ki-moon to serve as a Member of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) for a Three Years Term beginning from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018,” the statement read.

Amaechi received the letter from Alex Mejia, Director, decentralized corporation UNITAR, on behalf of the UN Secretary-General.

“By this appointment, the Hon. minister, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is expected to make useful and valuable contributions to the growth and development of UNITAR and is now empowered to guide UNITAR and all its works in Nigeria,” Mejia said.

Amaechi thanked the secretary-general for the honour and promised to work in accordance with the rules and guidelines of UNITAR ensuring that the objectives in Nigeria are achieved.

UNITAR is an autonomous Institute established by the United Nations for the purpose of enhancing the effectiveness of government in achieving major objectives of the UN.
It is particularly for the purpose of maintaining peace, security and development in developing nations like Nigeria.

The work of the institute is organized under five broad programme areas: strengthen multilateralism, promoting economic development and social inclusion, advancing environmental sustainability and green development, promote sustainable peace, and research and technology applications.
